Breast Cancer Care & Screening at Livingston HealthCare
Every three minutes a woman in the United States is diagnosed with breast cancer. Early detection is often the key to successful treatment and recovery. View this page for tips and care advice from the team at Livingston HealthCare.
Prevention / Screening Tips
Take steps to lower your risk and improve your chances of early detection:
- Live a healthy lifestyle: Avoid smoking, maintain a healthy weight, and exercise regularly.
- Know your body: Perform monthly breast self-exams.
- See your provider: Ask about clinical breast exams and personalized mammogram screening plans.
- Schedule your mammogram: Mammograms remain the best tool for finding breast cancer early—when treatment is most effective.
- The American Cancer of Radiology recommends screening mammograms starting at age 40 for women of average risk, but earlier and more intensive screening for high-risk patients.
Understanding Breast Density
Breast density refers to the amount of fibrous and glandular tissue compared to fatty tissue in your breasts.
Dense breast tissue:
- Can make cancer harder to detect on a mammogram
- Is itself a risk factor for breast cancer
If you have dense breasts, your provider may recommend additional imaging or more frequent screenings.
