When the Heat Rises, So Should Our Awareness

                Tim Benson, PA-C, Livingston HealthCare

As long summer days settle into southwest Montana, it’s a great time for both visitors and locals to stay mindful of their health. Our region’s dry climate comes an increased risk of heat-related illness—a range of conditions that can affect anyone, but pose particular risks for certain members of our community.

By definition, a heat-related illness is any injury or sickness that occurs when the body is unable to properly regulate its temperature due to environmental heat exposure. These illnesses exist along a continuum, ranging from mild symptoms like fatigue and heat cramps to severe and life-threatening conditions, such as heat stroke.

It’s important to understand that while anyone can develop a heat-related illness, certain groups are more vulnerable. Infants and young children, older adults, and individuals with underlying medical conditions or those taking certain medications may be at higher risk.

The early stages of heat illness can be subtle. You might feel unusually tired, thirsty, or develop a mild headache. Sweating increases, and you may simply feel “off.” As exposure continues, symptoms can progress into heat exhaustion. At this stage, people may experience dizziness, lightheadedness, or weakness—clear signs that the body is struggling to keep up with the heat.

The most serious form, heat stroke, is a medical emergency. In addition to earlier symptoms, a person may become confused, disoriented, or develop altered mental status. In severe cases, this can progress to seizures or even critical illness. These are signs that require immediate medical attention.

Most heat-related illnesses are preventable, especially when caught in the early stages. Prevention starts with awareness—both of the weather and of your own body. Limiting time in high temperatures, seeking shade, and taking regular breaks during outdoor activities can significantly reduce risk.

Hydration is another key factor. Living above 4,000 ft we are constantly reminded to drink water. Drinking fluids regularly, particularly those that contain electrolytes, helps the body maintain its natural cooling processes. Choosing light, loose-fitting clothing and avoiding direct sun exposure during peak hours can also make a difference. These simple steps are powerful tools for staying safe during hot weather.

Beyond personal prevention, there’s a broader community role to play. Heat doesn’t impact everyone equally, and some may face challenges in staying cool—whether due to limited access to air conditioning, mobility issues, or living alone. Checking in on neighbors, especially older adults or families with young children, can help ensure they have what they need to stay safe. A quick visit, a phone call, or offering a fan or a cool space can go a long way.

Summer in Montana is something to be enjoyed—and long sunny days are part of what makes this season special. But as temperatures rise, so should our awareness and preparedness. Recognizing the signs of heat-related illness, taking preventive steps, and caring for one another ensures that we can safely navigate even the hottest days.
