Pelvic Floor and Postpartum Physical Therapy: Restoring Strength, Confidence, and Comfort

                Kieran Nashan, DPT, Livingston HealthCare

Welcoming a new baby is one of life’s most profound transitions. Alongside the joy and wonder, your body is also navigating a complex recovery process. Pregnancy and childbirth, whether vaginal or via C-section, place extraordinary demands on muscles, joints, ligaments, and connective tissue. Postpartum physical therapy is a powerful, often under‑utilized resource to help new mothers heal, regain strength, and feel at home in their bodies again.

The weeks and months after delivery are sometimes called the “fourth trimester,” a time of physical repair, hormonal changes, and emotional adjustment. During this period, many women experience pelvic floor dysfunction, which can cause urinary or bowel leakage, pelvic heaviness, pelvic pain, or discomfort during intimacy. Others notice a separation of the abdominal muscles, known as diastasis recti, which affects core stability. Postural changes are also common after months of carrying a growing belly and now cradling or feeding an infant, and scar tissue from C-sections, perineal tears, or episiotomies can restrict movement and cause discomfort. These are common experiences, but they are not conditions you have to live with.

A skilled pelvic health physical therapist will evaluate your individual needs and design a program to support recovery. This may include gentle, progressive exercises to restore pelvic floor strength, targeted movements to close abdominal separation, and hands-on techniques to release scar tissue and improve mobility. Education around posture and alignment can ease the back, neck, and shoulder strain that often develops from feeding, lifting, and carrying a baby. Gradual return to activity ensures you can walk, exercise, or return to sports without risking injury.

A cesarean section is considered a major abdominal surgery, and physical therapy can play a vital role in recovery. Therapy supports healing by protecting the incision site, gradually restoring core and pelvic floor strength, improving posture and mobility, and reducing scar tissue adhesions. It also helps prevent long-term complications such as back pain or pelvic dysfunction. This approach focuses on gentle movement and positioning strategies that manage swelling and discomfort without placing undue stress on healing tissues. By rebuilding strength and promoting safe mobility, therapy empowers individuals to recover with confidence and reduce the risk of future issues.

The benefits of pelvic floor physical therapy go beyond physical healing. Regaining control over your body can boost your confidence, reduce anxiety, and support mental well‑being during a time when self‑care often takes a back seat. Many mothers find that addressing these issues early allows them to feel more empowered and better able to enjoy their time with their baby.

Postpartum physical therapy services are available within the same facility as the Shane G. Lalani Family Birth Center at Livingston HealthCare. This makes it easy for new mothers to transition from birth care directly into recovery support without having to navigate a new location. Having these services under one roof means your care team can collaborate seamlessly to support your recovery.

Caring for a newborn is demanding, but your health is the foundation for everything else. By addressing concerns early, you can prevent chronic problems, return to the activities you love, and step into this new chapter with strength, comfort, and confidence. Your body has done something extraordinary. Now, give it the care it deserves.
