“Home Care Girls” Brighten Up Don Meadow’s Life

After 36 years working for the same company in the aerospace industry, Don Meadows was forced to retire for health reasons. In 1999, he relocated from Phoenix to Livingston where his son builds custom homes. Over the years his healthcare concerns worsened and in 2004, he was hospitalized with pneumonia that was accompanied by heart and kidney problems.

“The doctor told me that I wouldn’t make it,” recalls Don. “But I did.” Unfortunately, the event left him paraplegic and bed-bound with only limited use of his left arm and hand. His mobility had been minimal prior to this illness, but the use of a power chair had given him some independence. That was no longer an option.

Livingston HealthCare’s home care staff began providing services to help care for Don and support him and his family. Initially, Don received occupational and physical therapy along with nursing care. His first nurse was Linda Roberts, LPN, who was later joined by Jody Dowell, CNA.

“We provide nursing and personal care twice a week along with some exercises,” explains Linda. “Don finished his time with the therapists, and he is now able to use a computer and remote controls.” Don has learned to use the Internet and send email. “He sends us a lot of email,” says Linda. “All the best jokes come from him.”

“I think that home care provides a lot of benefits for Don and his family,” adds Jody. “Twice a week there is someone different coming in, providing a nice change of pace for him because he is in bed all day every day. I think he looks forward to those two days, and it provides some additional support for his family as well.”

Regular home care also provides an extra set of eyes to watch Don’s condition. He may not feel a problem and his family may know something is wrong. “We are part of a healthcare team that cares for Don and other home care patients,” explains Jody. “We can address some health issues and we can let him know if there is an issue he might want to see the doctor about.”

Research shows that even for those living with chronic illness or disability, living at home is often the best option for physical and mental well being. Nothing can compare to the sense of security and comfort that comes from being in your own home. Home care services can allow patients to be at home while receiving professional nursing care or other services.

Don Meadow’s experience is a perfect example of the many benefits of home care. Over the years, Don has developed a strong relationship with Linda and Jody, and they feel as much for him. “Linda and Jody take really good care of me,” he says. “It has become more than just home care. It is a friendship."
