Nuclear medicine imaging techniques are used in the diagnosis of disease by showing the function of a body organ. Nuclear medicine procedures use very small amounts of radioactive materials, called radiopharmaceuticals, that are attracted to specific organs, bones or tissues. As the radiopharmaceutical passes through the body, it produces radioactive emissions. A special type of camera detects these emissions and then records the information on a computer screen or on film. It is used significantly in the areas of oncology, neurology, cardiology and orthopedics. If you have questions, please talk to your physician or call Imaging Services at 406-823-6441. |
