Digital Mammography

A mammogram is a study of the breast using x-ray. There are two types of mammograms. A screening mammogram consists of two x-ray views of each breast. A diagnostic mammogram may have more x-rays from other angles for evaluation of new abnormalities or of patients with a past abnormality requiring follow-up. Since the breast is composed of soft tissue, special x-ray machines and techniques have been developed exclusively for providing x-ray images of the breast.

Mammogram screening is recommended at age 40. By age 50, when the incidence of breast cancer increases, annual mammogram screening is critical. Remember, early detection can give you the gift of a lifetime. Read the stories of local breast cancer survivors for more about the importance of early detection.
